إِنَّا نَحۡنُ نَزَّلۡنَا ٱلذِّكۡرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ ۥ لَحَـٰفِظُونَ (٩)

Verily We: It is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Qur’ân) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption)(9)

IS QUR'AN WRITTEN BY SATAN?

POSSIBILITY #4: Satan helped the Prophet write it

Since the prophet was able to tell prophecies and new things a human could not have known then it must be satan who would help him write the Qur’an. and this is indeed one of the most illogical possibilities since we as muslims are taught to seek refuge from satan before starting to recite the Qur’an.

فَاِذَا قَرَأْتَ الْقُرْاٰنَ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللّٰهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطٰنِ الرَّجِيْمِ (٩٨)

“O, when you recite the Qur’an seek refuge in Allah from Satan the execrable.” (Quran 16:98).

The argument that Satan deceived Muhammad and made him write the Qur’an is not in line with the Islamic belief system. Muslims believe that the Qur’an is the literal word of God (Allah) as revealed to Prophet Muhammad through the Angel Gabriel. The verse 98 of chapter 16 (Surah An-Nahl) of the Qur’an emphasizes seeking refuge in Allah from Satan precisely to protect the sanctity of this divine revelation. Here are key points to justify this perspective:

    • Muslims believe that the Qur’an is a revelation from Allah, not a product of human effort or deception by Satan. This belief is fundamental to Islamic faith.

Added to that there are numerous verses in the Qur’an declaring satan as the mortal foe of the human. So how could it be possible that satan helped the prophet to write verses cursing satan himself and declaring him as the enemy? And why would satan tell his plan to tempt humans and expose himself like that? Therefore, it is impossible for satan to have help the prophet write the Qur’an.

In the Qur’an, Satan, known as Iblis, is indeed described as an adversary to humans. The Qur’an emphasizes the ongoing struggle between good and evil, with Satan actively trying to lead people astray from the path of righteousness. Below are some verses from the Qur’an that highlight Satan’s enmity towards humanity:

  1. سُوۡرَةُ البَقَرَة
    يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ كُلُواْ مِمَّا فِى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ حَلَـٰلاً۬ طَيِّبً۬ا وَلَا تَتَّبِعُواْ خُطُوَٲتِ ٱلشَّيۡطَـٰنِ‌ۚ إِنَّهُ ۥ لَكُمۡ عَدُوٌّ۬ مُّبِينٌ (١٦٨)

فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِٱلۡخُنَّسِ (١٥) ٱلۡجَوَارِ ٱلۡكُنَّسِ (١٦) وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا عَسۡعَسَ (١٧) وَٱلصُّبۡحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ (١٨) إِنَّهُ ۥ لَقَوۡلُ رَسُولٍ۬ كَرِيمٍ۬ (١٩) ذِى قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِى ٱلۡعَرۡشِ مَكِينٍ۬ (٢٠) مُّطَاعٍ۬ ثَمَّ أَمِينٍ۬ (٢١) وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجۡنُونٍ۬ (٢٢) وَلَقَدۡ رَءَاهُ بِٱلۡأُفُقِ ٱلۡمُبِينِ (٢٣) وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى ٱلۡغَيۡبِ بِضَنِينٍ۬ (٢٤) وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوۡلِ شَيۡطَـٰنٍ۬ رَّجِيمٍ۬ (٢٥) فَأَيۡنَ تَذۡهَبُونَ (٢٦) إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرٌ۬ لِّلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ (٢٧) لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمۡ أَن يَسۡتَقِيمَ (٢٨) وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ (٢٩)

Surah At-Takwir

So verily I call to witness the planets that recede (15) Go straight, or hide; (16) And the Night as it dissipates (17) And the Dawn as it breathes away the darkness― (18) Verily this is the word of a most honourable Messenger, (19) Endued with Power, with rank before the Lord of the Throne, (20) With authority there, (and) faithful of his trust. (21) And (O people!) your companion is not one possessed; (22) And without doubt he saw him in the clear horizon. (23) Neither doth he withhold grudgingly a knowledge of the Unseen. (24) Nor is it the word of an evil spirit accursed. (25) Then whither go ye? (26) Verily this is no less than a Message to (all) the Worlds: (27) (With profit) to whoever among you wills to go straight. (28) But ye shall not will except as Allah wills the Cherisher of the Worlds. (29)

The overall meaning:

Allah, the Most High, responds in these verses to the false claims of the Quraysh, who denied the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him). They accused him of being a magician, a soothsayer, a poet, and insane. They also rejected the divine revelation given to him. In response, Allah swears by the great stars that disappear during the day and move in the sky, emphasizing the divine origin of the Quran revealed to Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Quran is a message delivered by a noble messenger, Gabriel, endowed with great strength, and holds a high status with Allah. Gabriel is trusted among the angels and faithfully carries out the entrusted revelation.

Allah then addresses the Quraysh, stating that Muhammad (peace be upon him), whom they knew well for his truthfulness and trustworthiness, was not a madman. Muhammad saw Gabriel in his true form, created by Allah, in the highest horizon, where the sun rises, with utmost clarity.

Muhammad (peace be upon him) is not miserly in conveying the Quran to people; he is eager to deliver the message to all. The Quran is not the words of a cursed and expelled Satan but a reminder from Allah. Allah admonishes the disbelievers, questioning where they are turning away from the Quran, a clear truth. The Quran serves as a reminder for all of creation, and guidance is available for those who choose to follow it. Allah concludes the surah by asserting that the path to righteousness is subject to Allah’s will, emphasizing His authority over all worlds.

لَا يُقَـٰتِلُونَڪُمۡ جَمِيعًا إِلَّا فِى قُرً۬ى مُّحَصَّنَةٍ أَوۡ مِن وَرَآءِ جُدُرِۭ‌ۚ بَأۡسُهُم بَيۡنَهُمۡ شَدِيدٌ۬‌ۚ تَحۡسَبُهُمۡ جَمِيعً۬ا وَقُلُوبُهُمۡ شَتَّىٰ‌ۚ ذَٲلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ قَوۡمٌ۬ لَّا يَعۡقِلُونَ (١٤) كَمَثَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡ قَرِيبً۬ا‌ۖ ذَاقُواْ وَبَالَ أَمۡرِهِمۡ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ۬ (١٥) كَمَثَلِ ٱلشَّيۡطَـٰنِ إِذۡ قَالَ لِلۡإِنسَـٰنِ ٱڪۡفُرۡ فَلَمَّا كَفَرَ قَالَ إِنِّى بَرِىٓءٌ۬ مِّنكَ إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ ٱللَّهَ رَبَّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ (١٦) فَكَانَ عَـٰقِبَتَہُمَآ أَنَّہُمَا فِى ٱلنَّارِ خَـٰلِدَيۡنِ فِيہَا‌ۚ وَذَٲلِكَ جَزَٲٓؤُاْ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ (١٧)

 

Surah Al-Hashr

They will not fight you (even) together, except in fortified townships, or from behind walls. Strong is their fighting (spirit) amongst themselves: thou wouldst think they were united, but their hearts are divided: that is because they are a people devoid of wisdom. (14) Like those who lately preceded them, they have tasted the evil result of their conduct, and (in the Hereafter there is) for them a grievous Penalty― (15) (Their allies deceived them), like the Evil One, when he says to man “Deny Allah”; but when (man) denies Allah (the Evil One) says “I am free of thee: I do fear Allah, the Lord of the Worlds!” (16) The end of both will be that they will go into the Fire, dwelling therein forever. Such is the reward of wrong-doers. (17)

 

 The overall meaning is as follows:

Allah says that the hypocrites and Jews will not fight against you, O Muslims, unless they are gathered in fortified cities or behind walls and fortifications. Despite appearing united, there is severe discord among them, as their hearts are divided due to their lack of understanding. Allah then provides a simile to affirm the believers and belittle their enemies. The example is given of the Jews and hypocrites being similar to those before them, such as the Jews of Banu Qainuqa’ and the disbelievers of the Quraysh. They faced the consequences of their disbelief in this world, and a severe punishment awaits them in the hereafter.

Another example is presented, illustrating the hypocrites who promised to support the Jews of Banu Nadir if they were expelled and to aid them in battle if they fought, but they betrayed them. The Jews are likened to Satan who deceives humans by urging them to disbelieve in Allah. Once the person disbelieves, Satan disowns and abandons them, pretending to fear Allah. Ultimately, both the person and Satan end up in the Fire, dwelling there forever as a reward for the wrongdoers.

وَمَآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِكَ مِن رَّسُولٍ۬ وَلَا نَبِىٍّ إِلَّآ إِذَا تَمَنَّىٰٓ أَلۡقَى ٱلشَّيۡطَـٰنُ فِىٓ أُمۡنِيَّتِهِۦ فَيَنسَخُ ٱللَّهُ مَا يُلۡقِى ٱلشَّيۡطَـٰنُ ثُمَّ يُحۡڪِمُ ٱللَّهُ ءَايَـٰتِهِۦ‌ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ۬ (٥٢) لِّيَجۡعَلَ مَا يُلۡقِى ٱلشَّيۡطَـٰنُ فِتۡنَةً۬ لِّلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِہِم مَّرَضٌ۬ وَٱلۡقَاسِيَةِ قُلُوبُهُمۡ‌ۗ وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ لَفِى شِقَاقِۭ بَعِيدٍ۬ (٥٣) وَلِيَعۡلَمَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡعِلۡمَ أَنَّهُ ٱلۡحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّكَ فَيُؤۡمِنُواْ بِهِۦ فَتُخۡبِتَ لَهُ ۥ قُلُوبُهُمۡ‌ۗ وَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَهَادِ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ إِلَىٰ صِرَٲطٍ۬ مُّسۡتَقِيمٍ۬ (٥٤)

 Surah Al-Hajj

Never did We send an messenger or a prophet before thee but when he framed a desire, Satan threw some (vanity) into his desire: but Allah will cancel anything (vain) that Satan throws in, and Allah will confirm (and establish) His Signs: for Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom: (52) That He may make the suggestions thrown in by Satan, but a trial for those in whose hearts is a disease and who are hardened of heart: verily the wrongdoers are in a schism far (from the Truth): (53) And that those on whom knowledge has been bestowed may learn that the (Qur’an) is the Truth from thy Lord, and that they may believe therein, and their hearts may be made humbly (open) to it: for verily Allah is the Guide of those who believe to the Straight Way. (54)


The overall meaning is as follows: Allah says that He has not sent any messenger or prophet before Muhammad without the devil casting doubts and whispers during their recitation, intending to divert people from following the revealed message. However, Allah nullifies the plots of the devil, dispelling his whispers, and establishes the clear signs of His verses in their proper structures and meanings. Allah is knowledgeable and wise. This action of the devil is made by Allah as a test for those with doubts and hypocrisy in their hearts and for the hardened hearts of the polytheists who are not affected by admonition. The wrongdoers, both among the hypocrites and the polytheists, harbor intense enmity towards Allah and His messenger, deviating far from the truth. This serves to inform the knowledgeable ones who distinguish between truth and falsehood that the Quran is the true revelation from Allah to you, free from doubt, and that there is no way for Satan to influence it. This increases their faith, and their hearts submit to it. Indeed, Allah guides those who believe in Him and His messenger to the clear path of truth, which is Islam, saving them from misguidance
